Breaking down barriers and creating solutions.

Our Story

In 2010, the U.S. Census revealed a serious problem in Palacios: 43% of young adults did not have a high school diploma or GED. A group of concerned community leaders decided something had to change.
In 2013, they studied the needs of the town, talked with other leaders, and found three main priorities:

  • Job training
  • Adult education
  • Helping children succeed in school

With this in mind, the Palacios Community Hub officially opened in October 2014. Its mission was simple: give the community the tools and resources needed to succeed by strengthening families through literacy and support services. The Hub was designed as a central place where local aid programs could come together under one roof.

Building a Stronger Community

Palacios is a small town of about 5,000 people, with families from many walks of life—some facing poverty, others with greater resources. Over the years, different Executive Directors each added to the Hub’s vision. The goal stayed the same: improve quality of life and encourage self-sufficiency through literacy programs, support for children, job skills, adult education, and health services.
The Hub started with child services and CASA advocacy, but quickly grew as more needs became clear. Whenever funding or partnerships became available, new services were added. Understanding that Palacios is multicultural, the Hub recruited bilingual volunteers. As more languages were included—first Spanish, then others—more people came, and the Hub truly became a place for the entire community.

A New Home and New Opportunities

By December 2024, the Hub’s reputation had grown so much that it was offered space in the former middle school. This allowed for even more services, including:

A Thrift Store

A meditation and yoga room

A public art space

Easier access to legal and wellness professionals

The Hub also offers life navigation services—help with everyday challenges like figuring out a phone problem, spotting scam mail, making copies, sending faxes, or getting through government benefit applications.
English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes for Spanish speakers have been a long-running program, teaching both language and civics for those on the path to citizenship. In 2025, ESL for Vietnamese speakers was added.

Expanding Beyond Palacios

New programs often come to life quickly when staff passion meets community need. Growth must be steady because the Hub is funded through small grants, but the mission keeps expanding.
Seeing the Hub’s success, nearby rural towns—Edna, Port Lavaca, and Vanderbilt—asked for help. In December 2024, the Hub-on-the-Road Project began, bringing services to Texas’ Golden Crescent area.
Through it all, one thing stays the same: The Hub listens. Whether helping a person or a whole town, it offers care, understanding, and real solutions. The Palacios Community Hub—love in action.
